The Mills Observatory in Dundee is the first purpose-built public observatory in Britain, located at the summit of Balgay Hill in the midst of a picturesque woodland area. It was opened in 1935, offering visitors the opportunity to observe the night sky through various telescopes and learn more about astronomy.
Facilities and Offerings
The observatory features several telescopes, including a 400mm Dobsonian reflector that provides impressive views of the moon, planets, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. Another highlight is the historic Victorian refractor telescope, built by Thomas Cooke of York in 1871 and used on special occasions.
In addition to stargazing, the Mills Observatory also houses a small planetarium and various exhibition rooms focusing on astronomy and space exploration topics. Regular planetarium shows and events are offered to allow visitors to learn more about the night sky and the science of astronomy.
Special Events
In 2025, the Mills Observatory will celebrate its 90th anniversary with special events, including the observation of the planetary alignment in January and the solar eclipse in March, which will be 40% visible in Dundee.
